Today, Dr. Bahn continues building upon the successful career that he has developed. Here are some of the most important facets of his experience.
Education: The Root of Medical Knowledge
Charles Bahn is a professional who is committed to education. From earning degrees to conducting independent research, he is constantly improving his understanding of his field. Furthermore, he strives to integrate the latest findings and technology into his own practice.
The doctor started his educational career at Tulane University. Here, he managed to earn three bachelor’s degrees in just five years. Not only does this reflect his determination, but also his passion for learning. Additionally, the wide range of his study areas shows his diverse interests. Here are the three undergraduate degrees that he earned at Tulane University:
- Bachelor of Science in Biology (with honors)
- Bachelor of Science in Anthropology
- Bachelor of Arts in German
After completing his undergraduate work, he stayed at Tulane to pursue a graduate degree. In fact, he again earned multiple degrees simultaneously. These degrees include:
- Doctor of Medicine
- Master of Science in Anatomy
By earning a Master of Science in Anatomy, the doctor strengthened his skills in both biology and medicine. This degree allowed him to develop a fresh perspective from which to view his field. Additionally, it taught him how all of the parts of the body are connected. While he ultimately chose to pursue ophthalmology, this insight has enhanced his practice of medicine tremendously.
After completing his graduate work at Tulane, he enrolled at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Here he earned another graduate degree and completed other forms of study.
- Master of Science in Medicine
- Residency in Ophthalmology
- Fellowship in Ophthalmology
He also completed an internship at the University of Oregon. His internship, residency, and fellowship experiences allowed him to apply all of the information he had learned in a “real world” setting. As such, he developed his professional skills to a higher degree. Ultimately, these experiences improved his ability to work with his patients and his colleagues.
Further Work in Academia
Before opening his private practice in 1987, the doctor pursued academic research. He joined the United States Air Force as a Major. After enlisting, he was assigned the position of Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Armed Forces Medical School. He also devoted his time to conducting research.
This research spanned several topics, but two were particularly interesting to the scholar. The first was the effects that lasers have on the eye. Today, lasers are important tools for medical professionals. This research background has allowed the doctor to better appreciate the treatment options lasers provide.
The second research topic was corneal transplantation. Due to his research, Charles Bahn, MD, was offered the position of Medical Director of Lions Eye Bank District 22-C, which collected eye donations for corneal transplantation.
But this research is not the only mission that Dr. Bahn pursued. He shared the information he and his team garnered in a number of ways. Here are some of the other academic achievements he has made:
- Published papers pertaining to eye development and corneal transplantation, including clinical cases. These papers appeared in many journals, including Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science and Publication of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
- Presented many papers at professional events, including conferences and meetings held by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
- Partnered with two other professionals to write Slit Lamp: Examination and Photography. This book is currently in its third edition.
Because of the lasting effects it has had on his career, the doctor is extremely glad to have participated in academic research. Not only has it shaped his career, it has provided him with invaluable insight into the medical field and the wonders of the human body.
